Project
Health innovations, like new digital health software or AI diagnostic tools, need to meet essential regulations and standards before they can be adopted and scaled for use in the NHS. Innovators will also need to use and understand NHS procurement and reimbursement processes.
The NHS Innovation Service is an online service for healthcare innovators. It provides support for individuals and companies at all stages of their innovation journey to get their innovations adopted in the NHS and provide innovative solutions to NHS challenges. The NHS Innovation Service acts as an ‘information gateway’ to support people developing new innovative products, services or initiatives in healthcare to understand processes such as the regulations and standards they will need to meet, the real-world evidence they will need to demonstrate, and NHS procurement and reimbursement processes. It is a single entry point for innovators to register for support and/or to apply for certain programmes.

Health Innovation Wessex (HIW) in collaboration with Health Innovation North East and North Cumbria (HI NENC) manage the Needs Assessment Service (NAS), an essential first-step assessment for all innovators who register with the NHS Innovation Service. An innovator who comes to the NHS Innovation Service will receive a bespoke and expert analysis of their needs through NAS, and are referred to a number of relevant organisations who can provide advice or support to progress them along their innovation journey. Many innovators will have also receive their first contact with a health innovation network via the NAS as the team aims to refer an innovator to their local health innovation network, or refer them to a specific health innovation network as the first port of call. The team also meets with different support organisations across the UK to understand their offer to innovators and ensures referrals made through the service are accurate and well-informed. These organisations are integral to innovators being able to understand whether their innovation fits in the NHS and how to navigate a number of essentials steps including evidence generation, regulatory approval etc.
