Our partnerships are developed to tackle the region’s most pressing health challenges through interdisciplinary research and rapid innovation adoption, creating fertile ground for collaborations that aim to scale impact. Through our partnership with the NHS Central and South Genomic Medicine Service Alliance and a co-funded Genomics Innovation Director, we’re driving the adoption of novel genomic interventions that improve outcomes and position our organisations to be at the forefront of genomics and personalised medicine leadership.
Our co-funded programme manager with the Wessex Cancer Alliance delivers momentum in the uptake of early diagnostic technologies and the spread of innovations that align with national priorities, such as diagnosing 75% of cancers at stages 1 and 2 by 2028.
Wessex is home to a rich network of research centres funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), including the Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre (ECMC), Clinical Research Facility (CRF) and Applied Research Collaboration (ARC Wessex). The region hosts the UK's first dedicated cancer immunology centre, and a clinical trials unit. It is also home to leading academic institutions such as the University of Southampton (top 10% in the UK for research quality), University of Portsmouth, Bournemouth University, Southampton Solent University, University of Winchester and Health Sciences University.
The region also hosts the Wessex Secure Data Environment, enabling cutting-edge data science, real world evidence generation, and precision medicine.
With two international airports, direct rail links to London, and a £70bn regional economy, Wessex is a launchpad for innovation.
