Nicola Bent

Chief Executive

Nicola joined Health Innovation Wessex in April 2020 from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), where she was Deputy Director of Health and Social Care and Programme Director for System Engagement.

Nicola is a registered pharmacist, who has over 20 years’ experience in health and social care, working in senior roles at national, regional and local level on implementation, quality improvement, strategy and transformational change, medicines optimisation and patient safety, and cross sector partnership working.

Philippa Darnton

Director of Insight

Philippa Darnton is Director of Insight at Health Innovation Wessex. She has over 30 years’ experience in the NHS and academia. From her early career as an Allied Health Professional (SLT), she has taken her passions for improving patient care and innovation into roles in strategic planning, operational, service improvement and commissioning.

She joined Health Innovation Wessex in 2015 to lead programmes in evaluation, spread and adoption, pivoting support during the pandemic to rapidly capture learning from front line clinicians and managers through an innovative Rapid Insight approach. Having led a team to deliver over 100 independent evaluations of innovations in health care including digital solutions, her work has contributed critical insights to enable decisions about what innovation benefits patients and our health and care systems and how to implement it. Her large-scale improvement work has included programmes in stroke care, cardiac services and neuro-rehabilitation.

She has a Master's qualification in management from Warwick University, which equips her to manage a house build, two teenage boys and a young cocker spaniel.

Charlotte Forder

Associate Director - Communications

Charlotte is the Associate Director - Communications for Health Innovation Wessex. She specialises in healthcare communications and joined the organisation at its inception from predecessor Wessex HIEC (Healthcare Innovation and Education Cluster), where she brought integrated marketing and stakeholder management expertise to healthcare quality improvement programmes.

Charlotte has over twenty five years’ experience in the communications and marketing sector, including programme dissemination within STEM outreach at the University of Southampton, national Content Manager for NHS Direct Online, and corporate communications consultancy.

Leah Gallon

Associate Director - Innovation Adoption

Leah Gallon is the Associate Director Innovation Adoption and is overseeing a number of programmes including our locality work, National MedTech Funding Mandate, National Respiratory Programme and the Topol Digital Fellowship.

Leah joined the organisation from an acute NHS trust where she was the Clinical Service Manager for Therapies, and during the Covid pandemic worked as Silver Command and the Trust Covid Operational Lead. Prior to this she has worked in both acute and community NHS settings around Hampshire and Wiltshire.

Leah is a respiratory physiotherapist by background. She has worked in a variety of roles including clinical, operational, transformation and programme lead. She has delivered large scale projects, across systems and multiple organisations and has been involved in improving patient pathways, bringing in new digital options and ways of working.

Leah is passionate about making a difference in the NHS after starting her career as a physiotherapist and wanting to improve the quality of care for patients and support the workforce. She is using her skills developed across various roles to make a wider difference within the NHS across the Wessex region.

Emily Hunter

Associate Director - Insight

Emily is the Associate Director of the Insight team. She has strategic oversight of the team’s portfolio and of the high quality work we produce. Emily works closely with clients to scope our support and develop our business.

Emily has a background in evaluating global health projects and support Cancer Research UK’s early diagnosis programme, working closely with primary care and system stakeholders. She has led Insight’s evaluation offer for innovators, overseen large evaluations of complex programmes, and regularly delivers sessions to develop understanding and capabilities in evaluation.

Facilitative and calm under pressure, Emily attributes her work style to the huge benefits that come from her love of music, as a performer and a keen audience member.

Jo Murray

Associate Director - Innovation Adoption and Patient Safety

Jo Murray is the Associate Director for Innovation Adoption - Strategic Programmes and Patient Safety Lead. She has a portfolio of projects delivered through the Wessex Innovation Adoption and Wessex Patient Safety Collaborative teams, including cardiovascular disease and the national priorities laid out in the NHS Patient Safety Strategy covering deterioration, maternity and neonatal, medicines, and system safety improvement programmes. She is also a national co-lead for the maternity and neonatal workstream.

Jo joined us from Oxford AHSN (now Health Innovation Oxford and Thames Valley) where she was the workstream lead for sepsis and deterioration for five years. During the pandemic she played an instrumental role in the Covid Oximetry @ home project. She has a clinical background, working as a Respiratory Physiotherapist in several London teaching hospitals before moving to Hampshire and beginning her journey in patient safety and clinical governance at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. She is trained to Masters level in patient safety, quality improvement methodologies, facilitation and network weaving and is an ILM level 5 coach.

Jo is passionate about adding value and working collaboratively to achieve service-user centred care.

Tracey Purvis

Interim Director of Finance

Tracey joined Health Innovation Wessex in March 2025 from NHS Shared Business Services.

Tracey has over 20 years’ experience in public sector finance having previously worked at an Acute Trust and the Audit Commission

Frank Ratcliff

Director of Industry and Innovation

After a PhD in the genetics at the Sainsbury Laboratory, Frank quickly moved into commercial research, first developing, patenting and licensing a tool for functional genomics, and then moving to run a series of crop improvement projects at Syngenta. This work relied heavily on bioinformatics, and after 3 years Frank moved to the scientific computing team to support a range of projects across Europe and the US.

In 2003 Frank moved to Pfizer, and then to Boehringer-Ingelheim in 2007 where he worked on a variety of partnership projects with various NHS organisations. In this capacity he joined Health Innovation Network on secondment 2 days per week in 2013 to support their respiratory programme; a move which turned full-time in 2015 when Frank joined the commercial team of Health Innovation Network. His commercial experience spans all stages from lab research to major global products, supplemented with PRINCE2 and a CIM diploma in marketing.

Frank is married with two children and spends most of his spare time outside, either running, cycling, gardening or fishing.

Sarah Turl

Associate Director - Operations

Sarah has over 30 years' experience in a variety of management roles, operating across the public and private sector including operational, sales and marketing; bringing a wide-ranging skillset to her role as Associate Director - Operations for Health Innovation Wessex.

Sarah is also actively engaged in the local third sector as a volunteer, and as an independent local councillor, engaging with a wide range of organisations to influence decisions affecting her local community.

Emma Williams

Associate Director - Strategic Partnerships and Business Development

Emma is our Associate Director for Strategic Partnerships and Business Development, working in a corporate role to lead the development of our customer offer and to seek new and exciting partnerships across health, social care, academia, voluntary, community and social enterprises (VCSE) and industry. She also leads on the development of our business growth strategy and business planning.

Emma has worked for almost 30 years within management and frontline roles across health, social care, and the voluntary and community sector. She has wide experience in leading large scale organisational change, service redesign, stakeholder engagement and building effective network relationships. 

Sarah Willis

Genomics Innovation Director

Sarah joined Health Innovation Wessex in September 2024. She has over 20 years of experience in the NHS, working in clinical, operational and transformation roles. Sarah has a BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy degree from the University of Hertfordshire and is currently undertaking a Master’s degree in business administration. She’s held roles including Acute Therapy Services Manager, and Complex Discharge Manager, before transitioning to transformation. Prior to joining the organisation Sarah worked as Senior Programme Manager with the Central and South Genomic Medicine Service Alliance since 2021. She continues to partner with them in this joint role as Genomics Innovation Director.

Patrick Arnold

Programme Manager Innovation Adoption

Patrick Arnold is an Innovation Adoption Programme Manager with a focus on Primary Care. He joined us from a medical device sterilisation company working across the public and private healthcare sectors, and prides himself on not taking a ‘one size fits all’ mindset but instead finding a collaborative approach to explore the best possible solution for the partner that he is collaborating with.

In addition to his previous role Patrick has a wealth of experience in private healthcare with a focus on sales, business development and commercial activities. He has led and delivered large scale implementation projects with major acute NHS trusts which led to him undertaking an MSc in Health Management and a dissertation that focused on the spread and adoption of the Long-Term Conditions (LTC) Framework.

Patrick is passionate about finding ways to enhance the great work already being undertaken in primary care in Wessex and nationally to improve healthcare practices for clinicians, non-clinicians and patients.

Jenny Curtis

Programme Assistant Innovation Adoption

Jenny is an Innovation Adoption Programme Assistant who joined Health Innovation Wessex in 2023. Jenny’s background is in Further Education support services. She began her career as a Library Assistant at Peter Symonds College, before moving to Eastleigh College where she was a Learner Recruitment and Engagement Executive, supporting the learner journey from application through to enrolment. After 6 months, she progressed to a management position as Adult and Community Learning Team Leader, in which she oversaw and developed the College’s leisure course provision. Jenny received her first-class honours degree in Creative Writing in 2020 and has been featured in a number of publications, including Resurrection Trust – a collection of stories about living sustainably spearheaded by The University of Southampton.

Cheryl Davies

Senior Programme Manager Innovation Adoption

HIOW

Cheryl Davies has worked for the NHS for over 26 years. Graduating with a BSc Population Statistics from Southampton University, she has a strong passion for demography, population health and data to inform strategic decision making.

From 2007 -2018 she worked at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust at a senior level holding Operational Manager roles within Ophthalmology and the Emergency Department, where she led and implemented innovative projects, collaborating with staff and patients to deliver improvements in both flow and experience.

Cheryl has worked as a Business Manager and Project Manager, successfully project managing two national NHS Elect Projects; the development of Ambulatory Emergency Care Services including the development of new clinical pathways and a new build; and developing the Frailty at the Front Door model to provide a patient-centric frailty service direct from the Emergency Department to a frailty assessment unit. This generated a passion in improving services for the older population and led Cheryl to join the organisation as Programme Manager for Healthy Ageing in 2018 which yielded positive impact locally and nationally.

Since 2022, she has worked as a Senior Programme Manager supporting the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Locality supporting the local system in the identification and implementation of innovation. Following a successful secondment within the Innovation Research Life Sciences Strategy Policy team, contributing to the NHS Innovation Ecosystem Programme and final report in 2023, Cheryl continues to lead and support local innovation and promotes both business development and strategic partnership opportunities and is involved in the ARC2 knowledge mobilisation agenda.

Linda du Preez

Programme Co-ordinator Innovation Adoption

Linda is a Programme Co-ordinator for Innovation Adoption.

Linda is an experienced Occupational Therapist who worked for over 20 years as a clinician and team leader specialising in supporting those living with frailty to stay independent at home for longer and live the lives they choose. Prior to joining Health Innovation Wessex, she worked in a training role educating managers and staff on the importance of managing wellbeing in their workplaces. Her current role enables her to combine her passion for innovation and evidence-based practice, with her skill and experience.

Linda's role involves supporting the work of the Innovation Adoption directorate by co-ordinating spread and adoption of health and care innovations across Wessex.

Holly Green

Programme Manager Patient Safety

Holly joined Health Innovation Wessex in February 2024. She completed her BMid (Hons) degree in 2007 and has worked as a midwife in a variety of clinical settings.

In 2018 Holly started working within Hampshire and Isle of Wight Local Maternity and Neonatal System (LMNS) setting up the Wessex Maternity Academy, responsible for maternity training across Wessex. She has since worked with HEE to support the initiation of this model across the south east region. Within this role Holly developed and implemented a nationally recognised multidisciplinary training module on leadership within the birth environment.

She is also the Healthier Together Maternity Lead and designed the Healthier Together Maternity Urgent Care App which was launched to support maternity triage services across Hampshire. This initiative won the outstanding contribution to midwifery services - digital RCM award in 2023.

Holly is passionate about collaborative working to reduce variations in clinical practice, improving patient outcomes and experience.

Catherine Henderson

Patient Safety Programme Manager

Catherine is a Patient Safety Programme Manager who has joined HIW from a national patient safety investigation body, where she was a Safety Insights Analyst.

Her safety career began in commercial aviation where she spent 15 years as a maritime surveillance pilot, flying instructor and examiner. As an aircraft Captain she developed a keen interest in understanding how and why things go wrong at a system level, and how people respond in abnormal or emergency situations. After further training and experience, she took on the additional roles of Flight Safety Manager and Human Factors Instructor.

Catherine was interested in patient safety, so she started working in the NHS in 2016 to get first-hand experience of the complexities of healthcare, whilst bringing her knowledge and experience of a different safety critical industry with her. She completed a BSc in Adult Nursing whilst working in acute hospital care, and more recently completed an MSc in Human Factors and Ergonomics.

Catherine keeps a focus on system thinking, just culture and human factors in her patient safety work, and keeps current in aviation by regularly flying and maintaining a vintage light aircraft.

Simeon Kent

Programme Manager Innovation Adoption

Before joining Health Innovation Wessex, Simeon was working in one of the UK's Lighthouse projects setting up an automated Covid-19 mass testing facility in response to the Covid pandemic. Simeon's role within this team was as the Laboratory Operations Manager, ensuring the streamlined implementation of automation including liquid handling robots and loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) technology.

Before this he was working with Southampton Primary Care Ltd as part of the Business Development and Support team who pioneered the 'out of hours' primary care service using 'Hubs' for Southampton.

Simeon is passionate about pioneering technologies and even more passionate about seeing them used to improve the experience of NHS patients.

Robert Payne

Programme Manager Innovation Adoption

Rob studied Ancient History at Swansea University and graduated in 1998.

He spent four years working for a regional publication in Liverpool as a sales rep before moving to Australia in 2004.

Rob then spent ten years living and working in Australia (Melbourne) and has nine years of experience working in the travel industry and managing a business (Flight Centre). He has an FA level one coaching qualification and is involved with coaching his sons' football team.

Rob loves to travel and has explored much of Australia as well as many other destinations in Europe, Asia, the South Pacific and America.

Fiona Robertson

Programme Manager Innovation Adoption

Fiona is a programme manager within Wessex Patient Safety Collaborative, and within Nationally Prioritised Innovations for Asthma Biologics.

Fiona is a registered nurse with 17 years’ experience working in the NHS. She has spent her career working in several London trusts both in Emergency Departments and Critical Care Units in a variety of roles. During this time, Fiona developed a passion for patient safety and patient experience whilst developing her clinical expertise. In 2017 Fiona took a career break and completed the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race before returning to London to undertake a new role as the Major Trauma Service Lead for south-west London and the wider Surrey and Sussex region.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Fiona decided to move out of London and back to the south coast. She is looking forward to spending more time outdoors and being nearer to her family.

Grace Smith

Programme Manager Patient Safety

Grace started her career in the NHS in 2006 as a Therapy Assistant and continued this role whilst studying to become a physiotherapist. Having graduated in 2013 Grace went on to specialise in acute respiratory care, stepping outside the traditional role of a physio and becoming a Clinical Matron leading an acute respiratory ward, for which she won a national Advancing Healthcare award. Before joining HIW Grace gained a fellowship at Health Education England (South East) as Regional Allied Health Professional (AHP) workforce fellow where she led the regional implementation of the nationally commissioned AHP support workforce transformation programme and AHP apprenticeships, before joining the NHS Frimley AHP workforce team.

Grace is in the final stages of completing an MSc in Professional Practice in Healthcare with her dissertation due in January 2025. For this, Grace is conducting primary research utilising mixed methodology to explore the ‘The lived experience of AHP support workers in the NHS’.

Nicky Smith

Programme Manager Innovation Adoption

Nicky joined the organisation in July 2024 and recently completed an MSc in Health Sciences in 2024 from Oxford Brookes University.

She has a background in adult nursing working in the community, primary care and with children and young people. She has experience in transformation, innovation and engagement supporting populations and communities working collaboratively with the NHS Integrated care system (ICS) including local authority, social care, communities, and voluntary sector with a successful track record of delivering transformation capability, population health improvement and empowering and engaging communities to improve their health and wellbeing. Additionally, she has experience supporting families, children and young people and primary care delivering the UK childhood immunisation schedule (and covid vaccination) addressing health inequalities alongside outreach vaccination and tailored support to under-represented communities, advice and education for parent/carers, communities, and the voluntary sector.

Heather Stacey

Senior Programme Manager Innovation Adoption

Dorset

Heather initially joined Health Innovation Wessex in February 2021 to support the Mental Health Safety Improvement Programme and Managing Deterioration (Children and PEWS). Since then, she has moved to the Innovation and Adoption Team, with a focus on supporting the Dorset system.

Caroline Thomas

Programme Assistant Innovation Adoption

Caroline is a Programme Assistant for the Innovation Adoption team, having initially joined our Patient Safety team in April 2018.

As a Programme Assistant, Caroline has worked across the Insight, Medicines Optimisation, Patient Safety and corporate programmes providing project support and events management expertise.

Her background is in health insurance, and for 12 years she worked for one of the largest insurers in the world in claims management. During this time she gained experience in carrying out independent medical assessments, financial reviews and investigation of fraudulent claims.

She also has experience in staff coaching, occupational rehabilitation, recruitment, communications and implementation of small and large-scale change in both current and previous posts. In addition, she has experience in website management including search engine optimisation, sales and complaints handling.

Caroline is passionate about supporting teams to effect change for the better and is PRINCE2 certified.

Sarah Willis

Genomics Innovation Director

Sarah joined Health Innovation Wessex in September 2024. She has over 20 years of experience in the NHS, working in clinical, operational and transformation roles. Emma Wynn-Mackenzie

Programme Assistant Innovation Adoption

Emma is a Programme Assistant within the Innovation Adoption Team. She has held several administrative roles during her career.

Emma started working in HR for District Audit based in Otterbourne, running the new starter process and ensuring all staff data was correct. She moved to Southampton City Primary Care Trust in their HR Team, working on organisational development. This included working on the Improving Working Lives (IWL) and Investors in People (IIP) workplace accreditations, rolling out the annual staff survey, including analysis of the results and managing the staff bank of temporary workers.

Emma then moved into the Public Health Team as a Business and Planning Manager supporting Public Health Consultants with their projects and the Director of Public Health with the completion of their statutory functions including the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA). Key projects included supporting the campaign to fluoridate the water in Southampton and surrounding areas and moving the whole team into Southampton City Council under a TUPE like transfer.

Sophie Barton

Advanced Analyst

Sophie joined the Insight Team as Advanced Data Analyst in 2019 and has over a decade of experience working in the NHS. She holds a Master’s degree and worked for the Isle of Wight NHS Trust and the South, Central and West Commissioning Support Unit prior to joining HIW.

Her expertise lies in hospital data sets, where she specialises in transforming complex data into actionable insights that support healthcare planning and delivery. Beyond her professional life, she is a mother of two young children who enjoys spending time outdoors with her family. She is driven by a commitment to making a meaningful impact through data.

Jackie Chandler

Evaluation Programme Manager (Qualitative)

Jackie joined Health Innovation Wessex in 2019 as a Programme Manager and specialises in qualitative evaluations. These cover evaluating the implementation of digital solutions, service transformation projects and systems-based evaluations in integrated care systems.

Following a career in general and mental health nursing in the NHS and voluntary sector she moved into health research, where she worked with the Royal College of Nursing and the then National Institute for Clinical Excellence developing guidelines. Jackie previously worked on multi method trials in NHS settings with an emphasis on using qualitative methods in process evaluations. Jackie worked for the international organisation Cochrane for evidence synthesis (systematic reviews of studies) and is an associate editor of their Handbook. Her PhD used complex systems theory to better understand implementation of evidence-based care in healthcare settings, a focus of interest at HIW.

Outside work, Jackie practises yoga and is learning to play the harp.

Emmanuel Defever

Qualitative Evaluation Programme Coordinator

Dr Emmanuel Defever is a health and care service evaluator, working with Health Innovation Wessex as a Programme Co-ordinator for the Insight team. He enjoys using his analytical and interpretive skills to explore how implementing different ways of working impact patients, staff and other stakeholders. He has a special interest in mixed method approach to explore 'what works for who, how and why.'

He trained as a physiotherapist and his career has evolved from clinical to research and evaluation role. He worked in a range of settings including acute, community and mental health services. Driven by the natural desire to learn, he completed his PhD and continues to directly connect with people from all walks of life who access or serve in the health and care sector.

He is blessed with a lovely wife, energetic children and a joyful pony. As a family, they all enjoy going to the stable, pony shows, camping, cycling, and often a cheeky picnic come rain or shine!

Katherine Gale

Evaluation Programme Manager (Qualitative)

Katherine is an Evaluation Programme Manager within the Insight Team. With 18 years of experience in health and social care research and evaluation, she is committed to improving patient outcomes and supporting healthcare staff through evidence-based innovation.

Katherine joined Health Innovation Wessex in 2016 while completing her PhD in Operational Research at the University of Southampton. Her doctorate formed part of the Care Life Cycle (CLC) project, a multidisciplinary programme examining the supply and demand of health and social care within an ageing society.

Amanda Lees

Evaluation Programme Manager (Qualitative) - Insight

Amanda is an Evaluation Programme Manager in the Insight team at Health Innovation Wessex. Before this, she worked in academia as a qualitative and mixed methods researcher and evaluator, holding roles at the universities of Oxford (Oxford Vaccine Group), Southampton and Winchester. She has also worked in research and evaluation within the NHS, private sector, and local authorities.

Amanda's research focused on health and care, especially the experiences of those receiving and delivering services and she has published many peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and co-edited a book on mixed-methods research in wellbeing and health. Since joining Health Innovation Wessex in 2022, she has enjoyed the challenge of applying research techniques within the complex real world environment, working with multidisciplinary colleagues on a diverse range of projects.

Outside of work, she loves walking especially in the Lake District, spending time with family and friends and is trying to become a regular at Parkrun!

Rebecca Player

Evaluation Programme Coordinator (Qualitative)

Beck is an evaluation programme coordinator who has a passion for improving quality of life through mixed methods in health research and evaluation. Her goal is to improve health and care while helping to create positive change.

Previously, Beck worked as an analyst for a local authority, where she compiled Covid data and worked extensively with large datasets, including case rates and vaccination uptake.

Her passion for research began with her PhD, where she earned a mixed methods doctorate on multiple sclerosis and fatigue. She is also a qualified osteopath with experience in a number of multidisciplinary clinics in London.

Outside of work, Beck enjoys playing hockey, staying active through CrossFit, and spending time outdoors with her dogs.

Andrew Sibley

Evaluation Programme Manager (Mixed Methods)

Andrew joined Health Innovation Wessex in 2018 and is an Evaluation Programme Manager in the Insight team. Before this, he worked in academia as a mixed methods Senior Research Fellow, holding roles at King's College London and the University of Southampton. He has also worked in a research capacity directly for NHS and local authority organisations.

Andrew brings a wide range of expertise in using advanced quantitative and qualitative methods to support real-world evaluations of innovation. His research interests include the application of implementation theories/models/frameworks to support innovation adoption, evaluation of new care models and new roles to support long-term conditions, and medicines management.

What drives his work is a deep commitment to improving patient care and promoting proven innovation to improve health services. Andrew is passionate about bridging the gap between research and evaluation approaches to benefit the real world assessment of innovation.

Outside of work, he enjoys running, badminton, and travelling the world with his family.

Julia Wilson

Evaluation Programme Coordinator

Julia is a mixed-method researcher and project manager passionate about transforming healthcare through innovation. She currently works as an Evaluation Programme Co-ordinator at Health Innovation Wessex, supporting real-world evaluations aiding the adoption of innovations across the NHS. Her expertise spans across developing and integrating digital AI products, health behavioural science and mixed-method research.

Julia brings over seven years of experience managing and supporting complex academic and clinical projects, with a strong track record at organisations like Sacher AI, Allurion Technologies, University Hospitals Plymouth and the University of Plymouth. With a background in healthcare innovation and a portfolio of published research, Julia is driven by a commitment to improving patient outcomes and empowering communities.

Outside of work, she enjoys hiking, golfing, and exploring the intersection of technology and wellbeing.

Ani Haughton

Industry and Innovation Support Assistant

Ani joined Health Innovation Wessex from University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, where she held several administrative roles across various departments.

Ani started her NHS career working in Radiology in Royal Surrey County Hospital before moving to Southampton. Her career with University Hospital Southampton began in the Breast Imaging Unit working with teams covering routine imaging and referred testing. She then moved to Southampton Medical Examiners and assisted with the documentation and registration of the deceased from the hospital, linking her with a wide range of colleagues across numerous departments.

Ani then moved to the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Saliva Testing Lab based in Chilworth, working directly with the Managing Director and Senior Leadership team to deliver Covid-19 saliva testing across organisations in the area. Here, Ani found her passion for supporting projects that advance our understanding and use of technology to better our community.

Claire Martin

Programme Manager - HealthTech Innovation Strategist

Claire joined the Industry and Innovation team in January 2024 from her clinical role. She is currently working as a Programme Co-ordinator within the team supporting with programme delivery and innovator support. Claire has 12 years’ experience working clinically as a physiotherapist in the NHS, across multiple different specialities, her clinical experience has included working in community, outpatient and inpatient settings in addition to experience with team management, service development and quality improvement. Over the six years she has specialised in respiratory medicine including positive pressure ventilation, tracheostomy weaning and co-ordinating complex discharge planning in addition to being in a team leader role. During her clinical career she has been involved, and assisted leading, in the development and adoption and implementation of a cancer prehabilitation service and has recently led in the design and development of a discharge bundle for complex respiratory patients.

Prior to her role at Health Innovation Wessex, Claire has completed two Msc modules in innovation in healthcare through Buckingham New University (and Oxford AHSN as it was then).

Frank Ratcliff

Director of Industry and Innovation

After a PhD in the genetics at the Sainsbury Laboratory, Frank quickly moved into commercial research, first developing, patenting and licensing a tool for functional genomics, and then moving to run a series of crop improvement projects at Syngenta. This work relied heavily on bioinformatics, and after 3 years Frank moved to the scientific computing team to support a range of projects across Europe and the US.

In 2003 Frank moved to Pfizer, and then to Boehringer-Ingelheim in 2007 where he worked on a variety of partnership projects with various NHS organisations. In this capacity he joined Health Innovation Network on secondment 2 days per week in 2013 to support their respiratory programme; a move which turned full-time in 2015 when Frank joined the commercial team of Health Innovation Network. His commercial experience spans all stages from lab research to major global products, supplemented with PRINCE2 and a CIM diploma in marketing.

Frank is married with two children and spends most of his spare time outside, either running, cycling, gardening or fishing.

Peter Rhodes

Senior Programme Manager Industry & Innovation

Peter is Senior Programme Manager for Industry & Innovation. He joined Health Innovation Wessex in 2018 after a 30-year career as a Pharmacist in five frontline technological roles, four in the NHS and one in the pharmaceutical industry.

His professional specialism is in pharmaceutical manufacturing and quality management, but broad experience in secondary care means he can support technology across the clinical disciplines. He is well placed to quickly understand the place an innovation could have in the health system, and to draw together the support needed to bring innovations to fruition.

Peter is committed to supporting healthcare innovators to bring products and services to market that the NHS needs.

Gemma Snell

Senior Programme Manager Innovation & Industry Needs Assessment Service

Gemma is an Innovation and Industry Programme Manager. Her focus is to support innovators and to foster more innovation in the NHS to improve health outcomes. She is part of the NHS Innovation Service working with colleagues in Health Innovation North East and North Cumbria to assess the needs of innovators wishing to enter or develop within the NHS.

Gemma has a background of working as part of networks, initially the Cardiovascular and Stroke Networks in London seeing the city-wide transformation of stroke services to set up Hyper Acute and Acute Stroke units. She has also worked on pathways for cardiac surgery, both reducing waiting times for elective treatment at tertiary centres but also facilitating inter-hospital transfers for emergency procedures across London.

Gemma was Regional Lead for Diabetes in London working with all areas of the system from public health and primary care to vascular surgery, as well as considering the educational needs of patients and healthcare professionals to manage diabetes. Latterly she was part of the team that set up the first National Diabetes Prevention Programme to reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and other cardiovascular diseases.

During the Covid pandemic Gemma was instrumental in supporting University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust to set up its staff and patient testing programme. She was also closely involved in the trials seeking to understand the most effective testing mechanism and protocols.

Gemma has worked closely with various National Clinical Directors and participated in the HOPE Exchange programme, which took her to Sweden for a whistle-stop tour of the Swedish health and social system. When not working, she thoroughly enjoys outdoor pursuits including cycling, skiing, paddleboarding and trying out different cuisines from around the world.

Anna Wykes

Programme Manager - Industry & Innovation (Cancer Innovation)

Anna initially joined the Wessex Patient Safety Collaborative (PSC) in August 2019 as a programme coordinator. After working on the COPD Discharge Bundle project and Medicine Safety in Care Homes Programme, she moved to work on the urgent Covid Oximetry at Home programme during the autumn of 2020. Anna then moved to a new post, hosted by Health Innovation Wessex (at that time named Wessex AHSN) and jointly funded by Wessex Cancer Alliance to facilitate the adoption and spread of proven innovations that support earlier and faster diagnosis of cancer.

Anna has worked for various NHS healthcare services as a Registered Children’s Nurse. She has worked in both tertiary and community settings, in a variety of clinical roles, and has a passion for delivering and supporting healthcare services to deliver high quality patient care.

Most recently, as a Nurse Educator, she was responsible for leading the development and implementation of the first regionally delivered Paediatric Nurse Preceptorship Programme in England. This programme harnessed the expertise of the different paediatric teams throughout Wessex to provide standardised study days and documentation that promoted the delivery of high quality training and support to any new children’s nurse employed within the region.

Divya Beri

Business Support Assistant

Divya has been working for the NHS since 2021 and specialises in project support, communications, visual design and business administration.

Divya graduated from the University of Brighton in 2022 with a degree in Psychology with Counselling Studies and have since been working on her personal professional development at UHS. She started off in UHS as the Wellbeing and TRiM administrator and was successfully promoted to Business Support Team Lead for the Organisational Development team where her business administrative support focused on leadership development, wellbeing, EDI and talent.

Whilst at UHS, Divya also mentored a student from Choices College, a college specialising in developing individuals with learning disabilities, and was given excellent feedback from the student and the college for her exemplary coaching and interpersonal skills.

Alongside her full time role, she also was recruited by the Smoke-free Site team to be their Communications Officer, a role in which she was able to utilise her internal communications and marketing skills by creating comprehensive communication plans, visual marketing materials, organising large scale trust-wide events and speaking with hospital patients and staff members to create case studies for UHS's internal and external websites and intranet.

Gosia Czeladzka

Finance Manager

Gosia joined Health Innovation Wessex as the Finance Business Partner in November 2024. She has a degree in International Finance and over 15 years' experience of working in finance for a range of organisations and charities, including YMCA Fairthorne Group, Hampshire Cultural Trust, Nuffield Health and Brendoncare. 

She brings a proactive approach and problem-solving abilities to her role, leveraging her skills and experience to drive financial excellence and support meaningful initiatives. Gosia is passionate about contributing to organisations dedicated to making a positive impact, and to making a difference through her work.

Charlotte Forder

Associate Director - Communications

Charlotte is the Associate Director - Communications for Health Innovation Wessex. She specialises in healthcare communications and joined the organisation at its inception from predecessor Wessex HIEC (Healthcare Innovation and Education Cluster), where she brought integrated marketing and stakeholder management expertise to healthcare quality improvement programmes.

Charlotte has over twenty five years’ experience in the communications and marketing sector, including programme dissemination within STEM outreach at the University of Southampton, national Content Manager for NHS Direct Online, and corporate communications consultancy.

Rachel Heard-White

Data Analyst and Quality Lead

Rachel has worked across the private, public, and charity sectors. After completing a bachelor’s degree in Bioengineering from the University of Sheffield, she worked for a neonatal ventilator manufacturer. She has also worked at the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) as a medical device specialist and with The Brain Tumour Charity.

Throughout her career, Rachel has applied her data analysis skills to uncover insights, and drive informed decision-making. This approach has led to the development of innovative projects, resulting in better treatments and enhanced patient experiences.

Rachel will continue her data work at HIW in her role as Data Analyst and Quality Lead.

Sam is Executive Assistant to the Chief Executive Officer and joined Health Innovation Wessex in 2015.

Helen Kelley

Business Support Assistant

Helen joined HIW in November 2024. She has over twenty years’ experience working in administration and five years in event management. Before joining HIW, she worked at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, where she had a career in administration. In a previous role she completed an Executive Assistant Diploma gaining qualifications in Advanced IT User, Advanced Administration, Advanced Business Documents, Managerial Administration, Executive Assistant Skills and Leadership Skills.

Helen first started her NHS career as a 999 Call Taker for South Central Ambulance Service during Covid. After a year of 999 call taking, she moved back to administration as a Patient Pathway Coordinator in Child Health for the Sleep Team at UHS. In this role she managed all aspects of the patient’s pathway from referral to treatment. During her time as a Patient Pathway Coordinator, she was successfully promoted to Speciality Team Leader moving on to manage six specialities which included 19 Patient Pathway Coordinators.

Senior Communications Officer

Kathleen is the Senior Communications Officer at Health Innovation Wessex. She began her career in a local government museums team, where she project managed the creation of their first museums collection website. Having worked on cultural online campaigns within the authority, Kat moved to the communications team where she felt very much at home, initially assisting with the rebuild of the council website and then working more strategically with an additional focus on media and crisis communications.

Kathleen's career in local government spanned almost thirty years, managing digital and social media campaigns, election coverage and advising on communications for major development projects. She brings a wealth of communications experience to Health Innovation Wessex.

Tracey joined Health Innovation Wessex in March 2025 from NHS Shared Business Services.

Tracey has over 20 years’ experience in public sector finance having previously worked at an Acute Trust and the Audit Commission

Charlotte Silver

Communications Manager

Charlotte joined the organisation in August 2024, bringing with her eight years’ experience in NHS healthcare communications. Charlotte has worked across internal communications, external affairs, brand, press, social media and campaign marketing.

During her time with NHS Blood and Transplant Charlotte worked on the award-winning Organ Donation Law Change campaign and secured extensive press coverage to maintain blood stocks ensuring enough blood for patients. Charlotte developed and launched the first Living Kidney Transplant Scheme which funded community and faith organisations to positively engage black, Asian, mixed race and minority ethnic communities in living kidney donation. In addition to this she worked with significant community leaders and figures in local government to help address health inequalities.

She qualified with a BSc (Hons) degree in Business Management in 2012 followed by a MA in International Marketing and Communications both from the University of Surrey.

Charlotte is passionate about patient involvement in system design and ensuring patient communication is accessible. This has led her to become a patient advocate sitting on two governing bodies as a lay member – Serious Hazards of Transfusion (SHOT) and Safety of Blood, Tissues and Organs (SaBTO). 

Her voluntary work led to her being awarded the Percy Lane Oliver Memorial Award from the Royal College of Pathologists. This was in recognition for her Services to Transfusions Medicine and she has also received the HSJ Patient Safety Award on behalf of the SHOT team she supported.

Sarah Turl

Associate Director - Operations

Sarah has over 30 years' experience in a variety of management roles, operating across the public and private sector including operational, sales and marketing; bringing a wide-ranging skillset to her role as Associate Director - Operations for Health Innovation Wessex.

Sarah is also actively engaged in the local third sector as a volunteer, and as an independent local councillor, engaging with a wide range of organisations to influence decisions affecting her local community.

Associate Director - Strategic Partnerships and Business Development

Emma is our Associate Director for Strategic Partnerships and Business Development, working in a corporate role to lead the development of our customer offer and to seek new and exciting partnerships across health, social care, academia, voluntary, community and social enterprises (VCSE) and industry. She also leads on the development of our business growth strategy and business planning.

Emma has worked for almost 30 years within management and frontline roles across health, social care, and the voluntary and community sector. She has wide experience in leading large scale organisational change, service redesign, stakeholder engagement and building effective network relationships.
