A new system‑wide approach to maternity triage is transforming how pregnant women in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight access care. Developed by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Local Maternity and Neonatal System (HIOW LMNS) and supported by Health Innovation Wessex, the model combines the Healthier Together app with a 24‑hour centralised Maternity Triage Line (MTL).
Launched in November 2022 and staffed by midwives from four maternity trusts, the service supports around 17,000 pregnancies a year across five sites.
Clear benefits for women and staff
Between November 2022 and September 2025, more than 42,000 women registered on the Healthier Together app. Over 94% said they were satisfied with it, and 95% of staff agreed the new system gives fair and consistent access to care.
The new approach was introduced because women often did not know who to contact, and staff were frequently interrupted by calls while caring for patients. The app now gives simple red‑amber‑green guidance, and the central triage line ensures calls are answered promptly by trained midwives.
Improved safety and reduced pressure on services
Designed with women and families
The new pathway was co‑designed with service users through the Maternity and Neonatal Voice Partnership, helping ensure the information is clear, accessible and easy to understand.
Growing interest from other regions
The model is now attracting national interest, with plans underway to adopt it in Dorset and Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire ICB. Early discussions are also exploring a potential pan‑Wales approach.
