The UK’s Industrial Strategy and Life Sciences Sector Plan emphasise place-based clusters and Innovation Zones as engines of economic growth and health improvement. Yet, Wessex—despite its world-class assets—has not been featured in these plans.
This workshop hosted by Health Innovation Wessex set out to change that, by defining ‘Why Wessex’: a compelling value proposition to attract government investment in the life sciences community and unlock opportunities for innovation and prosperity across Hampshire, Dorset, and the Isle of Wight.
National Context
“The government is committed to supporting regions that can drive innovation and economic growth. Wessex has the right ingredients—research excellence, strong health systems, and industry partnerships—to play a leading role in the UK’s life sciences future.” — Alex McLaughlin, Deputy Director for Innovation and Growth, Office for Life Sciences
The Wonders of Wessex:
Delegates showcased the region’s strengths through dynamic elevator pitches, including:
- Academic research excellence
- Population health and integrated care systems
- Data assets
- Life sciences industry presence (pharma, SMEs, medtech)
- NIHR research networks
- Local government and economic development
- Estates infrastructure including science parks and innovation hubs.
Collaborative Workshops: Participants explored ongoing initiatives, future opportunities, and practical steps to showcase the unique assets contributing to the Wessex offer.
Commitment to Action: The day concluded with a shared pledge to develop a Wessex roadmap, ensuring the region is ready to respond to imminent opportunities such as Innovation Zones, life science clusters and place-based interventions.
A Call to Collaborate
“We are proud of the unique Wessex offer — including world-class research, rich data assets, and diverse urban, rural and island populations. Now is the time to come together and showcase these strengths. We invite partners across health, academia, industry, and local government to join us in shaping the Wessex roadmap and making our region a magnet for life sciences investment.” Nicola Bent, CEO, Health Innovation Wessex
Next Steps
Health Innovation Wessex will lead the coordination of this roadmap, working with partners to amplify Wessex’s voice nationally and ensure our assets are recognised in future government strategies.
