We are thrilled to announce that our Maternity and Neonatal Coaching Project, delivered by the Wessex Patient Safety Collaborative (PSC), was shortlisted as a finalist for the HSJ Patient Safety Award in the category of ‘Maternity and Midwifery Initiative of the Year’. This recognition celebrates the project’s role in strengthening team collaboration and driving measurable improvements in preterm optimisation across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. We would like to thank our partners for their extensive support, passion and expertise without which this project would not have been possible.
Supporting perinatal teams to deliver safer care
The MatNeo Coaching Project was designed to empower maternity and neonatal clinicians working within the Hampshire and Isle of Wight (HIOW) system. Through a co-designed coaching offer, the initiative focused on enhancing team dynamics, clinical confidence, and shared learning—all with the goal of improving outcomes for premature babies.
This work forms part of the national Maternity and Neonatal Safety Improvement Programme, which aims to reduce variation and improve safety across perinatal services.
“I feel incredibly proud to work in the Patient Safety Collaborative at Health Innovation Wessex and have this innovative project shortlisted for an HSJ Patient Safety award. It demonstrates the value of supporting high-functioning perinatal teams in delivering the best care in preterm optimisation.” Holly Green, Programme Manager, Patient Safety (MatNeo)
Driving change
The coaching programme has shown promising results in improving communication, coordination, and clinical outcomes within perinatal teams. By fostering a culture of continuous learning and shared responsibility, the project is helping to build safer, more resilient maternity and neonatal services across the region.
