Dementia Friendly GP Surgeries: Farnham Dene makes it 50

1 February 2017

Over 50% of surgeries in Wessex are on a journey to become Dementia Friendly, supported by the Wessex Academic Health Science Network based at the University of Southampton Science Park.

Farnham Dene surgery in Farnham recently became the 50th surgery to complete its accreditation.  All three surgeries based at Farnham Centre for Health are now Dementia Friendly.

Claire Giles, assistant practice manager, said: "Becoming a Dementia Friendly practice has been an enjoyable and informative process, with support from Katherine Barbour throughout.  Staff felt the dementia training provided was very useful and we have improved our support for people living with dementia, with a complete review for the patient.  This also offers support to carers and provides information on local services as well as treating the patient’s needs.   We look forward to helping our patients with dementia get the very best support from our practice.”

Steps to become Dementia Friendly include staff training, patient and carer involvement, an environmental audit, carer identification and support, and making links with local services that help people with dementia and their carers.  The extensive suite of resources available to assist surgeries in undertaking this project can be accessed on our Creating Dementia Friendly GP Surgeries page.

Benefits identified:

  • 6% reduction in clinical consultations
  • 20% increase in active care plans supporting people to live well with dementia
  • 16% increase in diagnosis rates
  • Over 1000 staff trained in dementia awareness and understanding
