Xim Lifelight™: a digital health innovation supported by Wessex AHSN.
Katie Cheeseman: I am delighted to be able to welcome our first guest author to the digital blog, Laurence Pearce (Founder & CEO) from xim. Over to you, Laurence, and thank you for taking the plunge (so to speak):
Guest blog:
Our new and exciting digital health technology called Lifelight™ is about to be released to customers and users. While developing our new product, xim has been nurtured along the way by the Catalyst Centre at the University of Southampton Science Park and supported by Wessex AHSN.
As we mark our first anniversary at the centre, and continue to work closely with the AHSN, we can look back at a year packed with significant milestones.
For xim, this has meant a transition from an NHS and digital media consultancy to an entrepreneurial company developing our own digital health technology.
Firstly, we won a place at the Catalyst Centre following a two-day event in the spring of 2015 organised by SETsquared and Wessex AHSN to hone and then pitch – Dragons' Den style – our value proposition. And then we began the hard work of securing funding, developing the technology, networking with potential customers and developing the brand in readiness for launch. Funding from the AHSN and Innovate UK has helped us accelerate this development towards signing up our first customers.
Xim’s product, Lifelight™, is a camera-based vital signs tracking system that will provide users with monitoring and in time, early warning of critical health events in their own home. Being camera based, no contact is needed and the process of measuring vitals including pulse and respiration is simple, quick and easy for the end user. The revolutionary aspect is that no special hardware is needed, the technology simply uses the camera built into everyday smartphones and tablets. That is the primary use-case we are exploring but as a user-focused company we have also discovered some other promising uses for the technology which expands the value of our work.
So what is our focus at the start of our second year?
We’re about to start clinical validation trials with University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust which will confirm that our prototype is ready – and we’re into the detail of negotiating deals with various customers, which also means we’re ready to grow and explore investment.
