This project accelerates the adoption of genomic innovation by supporting delivery of a range of projects which dovetail with the Genomic Medicine Service Alliance (GMSA) mainstreaming strategy. We will improve patient outcomes, in partnership with ICBs, NHS providers, and universities, by enabling access to timely genomic testing and treatment, as well as access to research trials. We also collaborate with innovators to support implementation of existing innovations, as well as identifying new opportunities for novel breakthrough interventions.

Our impact

Embed the outputs of the Genomic Networks of Excellence to improve health outcomes

Drive NHS GMS support for and recruitment to clinical research trials, understanding active clinical trials within the region and nationally

Develop and sustain knowledge of the drivers of genomic innovation and their impact on health care systems.

Health Innovation Wessex and the Central and South Genomic Medicine Service Alliance (CAS GMSA) have partnered to deliver a genomic innovation programme.

NHS England’s Accelerating Genomic Medicine in the NHS strategy sets out a framework for delivering a world leading genomic medicine service. The strategy has four priority areas:

  • embedding genomics across the NHS through an innovative service model from primary and community care through to specialist and tertiary care
  • delivering equitable genomic testing for improved outcomes in cancer, rare, inherited and common diseases, and in enabling precision medicine and reducing adverse drug reactions
  • enabling genomics to be at the forefront of the data and digital revolution, ensuring genomic data can be interpreted and informed by other diagnostic and clinical data
  • evolving the service through cutting edge science, research and innovation to ensure that patients can benefit from rapid implementation of advances.

To deliver these genomic priorities, Health Innovation Wessex and CAS GMSA have common aims and objectives of delivering national programmes of work, tackling health inequalities, and delivering regional health priorities.

This genomic programme will focus on nine areas:

  • pharmacogenomics
  • cancer testing and early detection
  • genomics training, education and workforce
  • cardiovascular disease
  • data, digital and AI
  • Genomic Networks of Excellence
  • The Generation Study
  • research and innovation
  • equity of access

The aims of the programme are:

  • to generate evidence and models of adoption for new technology and testing
  • to embed the outputs of the Genomic Networks of Excellence into local populations, linking these to relevant integrated care board plans
  • support recruitment to, and participation in, The Generation Study; a national newborn screening research trial
  • understand the capacity and capabilities within the regions and nationally to support clinical trials in Wessex and the wider CAS regions
  • co-create research bids for population centric research needs, addressing equality, diversity and inclusivity goals
  • drive the outputs of the Research and Innovation Collaborative, working with Genomic Medicine Service innovation directors
  • promote Wessex and the wider CAS area as a desirable and accessible testbed for UK and international innovators.
