Overview

Wound Care Strategy Programme (NWCSP)

Wound care across the UK can differ depending on where you live. Services vary widely and that means patients don’t always get consistent results. To tackle this, the National Wound Care Strategy Programme (NWCSP) came up with evidence-based recommendations aimed at standardising care and improving outcomes.

Building on this, the Transforming Wound Care (TWC) programme was launched by the Health Innovation Network, making it a priority initiative. They brought in eight NHS Test and Evaluation Sites to work with healthcare staff and patients to take a deeper look at how well the NWCSP recommendations worked in practice.

“The TWC Evaluation has directly supported the development of a Community Transformation Wound Care programme for adoption and spread across the Network. The evaluation has also supported the growing evidence based of the benefits that can be achieved by implementing the NWCSP lower limb recommendations and having a dedicated service”

An independent evaluation of the TWC programme was carried out over the course of a year, led by the Health Innovation Wessex Insight team. It was a complex project, using a mix of evaluation methods to explore the impact on wound healing, health inequalities, and how the programme was being put into action.

Our methods included systems mapping at all eight sites, interviews and surveys with staff and patients and analysis of a detailed quantitative data set.

What did we find?

Looking at data from a six-month period, we saw some encouraging results:

  • Healing rates improved—more wounds were healing within 12 weeks of being identified by a healthcare professional
  • Staff felt more confident delivering care, which led to faster healing, better outcomes, and fewer appointments
  • 100% of patients surveyed had positive experiences, praising staff attentiveness and flexibility.

Some challenges did remain, especially around integrating the NWCSP Lower Limb Recommendations into existing NHS systems and addressing patient-specific issues.

Overall, the programme showed real promise in improving lower limb wound care with early signs of better patient outcomes and stronger staff engagement.
