My role encompasses the implementation and evaluation of innovation adoption at the front line of NHS care, which is both hugely rewarding and challenging. I often find pockets of enthusiasm to trial new technologies outlined with scepticism and resistance. This is when we in the AHSN Network need to go beyond project management and engage the teams we’re working with. We’re not just asking people to try a new device or app, we’re shifting attitudes and culture to embrace technology which disrupts the norm. That’s no small ask, especially as it’s interrupting incredibly busy schedules.
My presentation at HETT explores a method to tease out the reasons for resistance and how to set firm foundations for innovation adoption. At the heart of these projects are the people who will be using the technology, and each person will have a different mindset on what you’re hoping to achieve. Adapting your implementation is a key to adoption, a theme I’ll also explore with some examples I expect will resonate with colleagues from the AHSN and the wider health eco-system.
Barriers and challenges vary from place to place, region to region, but fundamentally they can be approached in the same way – and taking the time to develop a culture ready for rapid technological disruption is something that will not only support innovation adoption now, but in the future as well.
