The Velocity Health programme was launched in partnership with Wayra UK, Telefonica’s digital start up accelerator, to invest in digital innovation in healthcare to address the challenges outlined in the NHS Five Year Forward View in 2015.
After a hugely successful first year focusing on prevention, Velocity Health will continue its commitment to the five year forward view for 2017. Our challenge to the start-up community opened on 27 September 2016, and two verticals were launched to support start-ups developing technologies that support those living with lifelong health conditions:
1. Living with and Beyond Cancer will help to support people affected by cancer to self-manage their recovery
2. Delivering on Diabetes will aim to improve the treatment and care received by people living with Type 2 Diabetes
Both have the task of increasing survivability and the sustainability of healthcare provision – find out more here.
Up to a total of £64K will be offered in investment to a selected number of start-ups which will include 50 per cent funds and the rest made up of dedicated acceleration services such as access to a network of mentors, coaches and investors. This will also include office space within Wayra UK’s academy in Central London and potentially, access to Telefonica’s customer base (more than 300 million) and MSD’s networks locally and globally. This truly is a great opportunity for a start-up as they receive the expertise, experience and knowledge of MSD, a global healthcare company combined with the digital start up know how of Wayra.
