The NHS Innovation Challenge Prizes seeks to identify innovations, whether a new care pathway, service or technology, that has the potential for wide scale spread and adoption that can transform areas of NHS delivery and improve patient outcomes. The Five Year Forward View has set out the vision for the NHS and innovation is at its heart.
Wave 1 of the programme will be launching on Monday 13 July, which will comprise of two challenge areas:
- Cancer care (£100,000 supported by MSD) - To recognise and award initiatives that exemplify the modern patient pathway in cancer, by demonstrating clear delivery of the new Cancer Strategy and Five Year Forward View through New Models of Care.
- Acorn challenge (£50,000 supported by NHS England) - which seeks to recognise and reward small ideas that have the potential to make a big difference to patients.

Dr Keiran Hand from University Hospitals Southampton NHS Trust is an example of how innovation Challenge Prizes can transform areas of NHS delivery improving patient outcomes. Dr Hand won the 2014/15 Infection Control Challenge prize; Wessex AHSN is proud to be supporting him in the further development and spread of the Microguide decision support tool through our Accelerator Fund. 15 July 2015 - Programme opens for applications at 12 noon
14 September 2015 - Programme closes for applications at 12 noon
W/C 21 & 29 September 2015 - Sift process to be carried out remotely
Early October 2015 - Short listed applicants invited to assessment session by e-mail
22 October 2015 - Assessment Session: Cancer (30 minute slot between 10:00 and 17:00 at Quarry House Leeds)
16 October 2015 - Assessment Session: Acorn (30 minute slot between 10:00 and 17:00 at Wellington House, London)
W/C 23 November 2015 - Showcase Event and Award Ceremony for winners
