Thanks to a pilot scheme organised by Jisc (representing UK Higher Education) and the NHS, all NHS staff in the UK have been provided with online access to the full-text of over 2,000 cutting-edge research journals.
Publishers taking part in the pilot include AAAS, Annual Reviews, Elsevier, IOP Publishing, Nature Publishing Group, Oxford University Press, Royal Society of Chemistry and Springer.
Some of the publishers have made their content available directly from computers on the NHS network whilst others have made their journals available from anywhere on the Internet via NHS OpenAthens.
NHS OpenAthens usernames and passwords are available to all staff working in the NHS and already provide access to a large number of online journals, books, databases and point of care tools. To register for NHS OpenAthens see https://openathens.nice.org.uk/ and for more information about the journal pilot see http://tinyurl.com/finchpilot
Titles are being rolled out gradually with some technical issues to address in some localities so not all content may be available in every Trust yet. Please contact your local NHS library service (http://www.hlisd.org/) to find out what’s available so far in your local Trust.
With thanks to Helen Bingham, Library and E-Learning Resources Manager, Health Education Wessex & Health Education Thames Valley
