Hampshire patients to benefit from a share of £2.61 million investment to advance respiratory transformation across England

Nine health systems across England have been awarded funding totalling £2.61 million through the Respiratory Pathway Transformation Fund (PTF) to deliver innovative projects between October 2025 and March 2026. The PTF is funded by NHS England with the aim of making system-wide transformation in asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) care.

Collaborative consortia of system partners were eligible to apply for up to £300,000 each. Every application was required to address both national priorities:

1. Early and accurate diagnosis – expanding access to quality-assured spirometry and restoring diagnostic pathways.

2. Risk stratification and optimisation – proactively identifying and supporting rising-risk COPD patients with integrated, equitable care.

A nationally coordinated evaluation will wrap around this work, providing a consistent evidence base, sharing learning and informing future investment.

A consortium made up of Hampshire and Isle of Wight health organisations applied for the funding with University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) as the lead applicant securing £300k funding, through the Pathway Transformation Fund (PTF), to deliver innovative projects to transform asthma and COPD care. 

Health Innovation Wessex helped the consortium to develop the bid and will be facilitating monthly progress sessions, links to the Health Innovation Network leads and data submissions which will help inform the national evaluation.

Building on our existing work in Hampshire, this programme will enable us to target health inequalities, particularly in areas of deprivation, and deliver meaningful improvements for patients with asthma and COPD. It also provides a valuable platform to strengthen and expand partnerships across integrated neighbourhood teams, which are essential to delivering joined-up, person-centred care.”
